Dan Sisson has managed lawns, a garden center, and a fertilizer application group but moving into golf was a “culture shock.” He discovered a product that was a very pleasant surprise to help him along his journey.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan Sisson discovered he\nloved managing turf long before he came to golf. \u201cI spent a few years finding\nmy niche in turf,\u201d he recalls. \u201cTaking care of grass was always something I\nloved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t take the\ntraditional route. He started with the old Scotts Lawn Care organization and\nbecame a supervisor and manager there before moving to a big Connecticut garden\ncenter that had a fertilizer group specializing in sports turf and commercial\napplications. \u201cWe did football fields, soccer complexes, you name it\u201d but he\nhad never set foot on a golf course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That changed about 8 years\nago when we became an assistant at North Ridge Golf Club right in his backyard\nin Southington, Conn. \u201cIt was definitely a culture shock. There was a lot more\nto it than I ever knew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the help of his\nexperienced superintendent, Tom Rodden, he jumped in and learned. \u201cTom let me\nrun with it without holding my hand. He\u2019d tell me what needed to be done and\nI\u2019d figure it out. He let me fail a few times too and I learned a lot from\nthat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also did the UMASS Stockbridge winter school. \u201cI kind of felt like I knew a lot of it, but the plant pathology was fascinating. I gravitate toward the academics of turf. Learning something new about the morphology, the epidemiology, the way it transpires. It just captivates me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today Sisson leads the maintenance\nprogram at Hawk\u2019s Landing Country Club, a busy public course in central\nConnecticut built in the \u201860s and redone in 2004. It needed a lot of love when\nhe arrived, but he was up to the challenge. He\u2019s a tinkerer who loves the\nconstantly changing challenges of turf. \u201cI push the envelope a little,\u201d he says\nwith a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he started in 2015 he\nhad three challenges. First, there was a massive thatch layer on greens (\u201cthere\nwas 3 inches of thatch and a local agronomist told us we might be better off just\nsod-cutting them\u201d). Second, he needed to amend the soil which was extremely\nacidic \u2013 in the low 5s to high 4s. Finally, he needed new equipment, including\na sprayer, and a pumphouse and irrigation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew we couldn\u2019t do\neverything right away but fixing the soil was the priority and the thing we\ncould do right away.\u201d He started with deep-tining and coring. Soil testing\ndrove his solutions process. \u201cThe exchange capacity was terrible. They were\nholding too much water, there was no calcium, no magnesium and barely any\npotassium. I got the calcium level to where it was supposed to be and they are\ngood now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, thatch is down to a minimum and he has 4-5 inch \u201cwhite fluffy nice thick roots.\u201d The remaining issue was moisture management. Sisson was making progress but still spending too much time on the end of a hose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was particularly\nfrustrated after another wetting agent\/penetrant burned some turf. \u201cI was\nlooking for another type of wetting agent to give me a month-long hydration\ninterval. My problem was more than just getting water through the soil, it was\nholding it as well. I was a one-man band and hand-watering just wasn\u2019t\nfeasible. I needed a wetting agent that was going to give me longer\neffectiveness and reduce that syringing.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was an agronomic issue,\nbut also a work-life balance challenge. \u201cIt\u2019s really tough on your family life\nand your state of mind when you have to be there all the time to water,\u201d he\nsays. He started working with his distributors, particularly Heather Garvin of\nHart\u2019s ProTurf, to test different wetting agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was trial by fire. The\ncourse is built on top of a sand quarry so it just flew right through. I just\nwanted a little more time so I could water later in the morning because it just\nwasn\u2019t an option in the afternoon when we\u2019re doing 45,000 rounds a year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So starting in the fall of\n2016, he began testing different products on different greens. That\u2019s when he\nfound Revolution\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the best. It reduced\nthe hand-watering a lot and it also gave me a longer interval, so I wasn\u2019t\nbeing forced to spray every two weeks at a high rate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He now uses the 6 oz rate of\nRevolution every 28 days like clockwork. \u201cI make sure I don\u2019t miss that\nwindow.\u201d He\u2019s also added Dispatch\u00ae<\/sup> into the mix on greens. \u201cI do 20\noz of Dispatch per acre plus the 6 oz of Revolution and that reduces the amount\nof water I have to put on the greens right after the app.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I would spray\nRevolution it was fantastic. I knew it was going to go into the soil and do\nwhat it needed to but the extra watering in worried me. And I didn\u2019t like\nspraying in the rain. Makes it difficult to tell if it got washed out. It\u2019s a\nprecarious process. But by adding Dispatch, he went from having to do three\nintervals down to two. \u201cI can water in a little bit less with no puddling or\nponding.\u201d He\u2019s able to do the interval spray in one \u201cmaintenance Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He credits Tom Valentine with\nthat idea. \u201cI have amazing help from my distributors and suppliers like Tom. I\ncouldn\u2019t have done it without them. They supported me and the direction I\nwanted to go and I couldn\u2019t be more grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s also reducing other\ninputs like nitrogen. \u201cMy first year I was using 4 lb. of N and now I\u2019m down to\n2.75 and I\u2019m trying to get that down even more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what prompted him to send\na \u201cfan letter\u201d to Aquatrols?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to say thank you very\nmuch. I appreciate all your products. They\u2019ve helped me a lot on every part of\nmy property. I use Dispatch on fairways, I use Sixteen90 \u2122 on tees and the Revolution\/Dispatch program on greens\nhas been huge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What difference has the\nRevolution\/Dispatch combo made for him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s allowed me to spend\nmore time with my family. That\u2019s the ultimate value. My son is 7 and my\ndaughter is 5 and I hate being away when I don\u2019t need to be. My dad worked a\nlot when we were kids and he had no choice. I respect that and understand that\nbut I wanted to be there for my family. This program has allowed me to do that.\nThat\u2019s by far the most important benefit any product could give me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s his message to other\nsupers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope that more supers can\nbe more humble and do their due diligence on different ideas and different\nproducts and not be married to any particular technology.
