When Jake Wentz arrived at\nthe Verandah Club in Ft. Myers six years ago, things were not good. \u201cIt was a\npretty neglected operation. There wasn\u2019t any kind of weed control or spray\nprogram and most of our equipment was old hand-me-down stuff from Bonita Bay\ngrow-ins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worst of all, a bad\npre-emerge app six months earlier had left the course \u201cthree-quarters dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was nowhere to go but\nup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, a little history: Wentz has been in the business for close to 20 years after graduating from the Ohio State two-year turf program in 2002. After school, he headed south (\u201cI wanted to go somewhere where I didn\u2019t have to grind reels and plow snow for six months a year\u201d) to Florida. He is yet another turfie who earned his stripes at the legendary Fiddlesticks GC agronomy program under the tutelage of Matt Fancher. Wentz was super on Fiddlesticks\u2019 championship course for 8 years and had the distinction of hosting a rare USGA championship in southwest Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when he took on two\nnearly dead courses in 2015 he was as prepared as he could be. His plan was\nsimple but not easy. \u201cWe focused on getting everything we could control the way\nit should be,\u201d says Wentz. \u201cWe did edges, took out the weeds, cleaned up and\nedged the bunkers, and got the beds looking good. There are 25 miles of\nlandscape and 275 acres of turf on this property. We couldn\u2019t do everything at\nonce so we fixed what we could and nudged the 20-year-old 419 bermudagrass\nalong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hard work paid off.\nSuccess breeds success so with happy golfers came additional funding from his\ncompany, Hampton Golf, for reseeding of both courses and a new equipment lease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the way, Wentz\ncontinued to practice what he\u2019d learned at Fiddlesticks: innovation. For\nexample, trying Zipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was never a big wetting\nagent guy. I always worried about the potential to burn if I didn\u2019t water it in\nright. But we had a huge sand topdressing program going so I mainly used them\nafter topdressing to keep the dew down and keep the sand off golf balls.\nGolfers said the greens were the best they\u2019d ever been but the sand was making\nthem crazy. And we were still hand-watering four or five days a week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He decided to try Zipline\ninstead of his previous \u201ccheapo\u201d wetting agent and noticed immediately that it\nwas different. \u201cWe topdressed in half the time we normally did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, it had an\ninstant impact on hand-watering. \u201cWith Zipline, we\u2019ve cut hand-watering time by\n85%. We apply it right after our topdressing app, spin the heads for a few\nminutes and that\u2019s it. Golfers don\u2019t even notice us doing it. No golf balls\ncovered with sand and no trying to close the course at 1 p.m. to make an app.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the labor savings is what\nreally sells it for Wentz: \u201cIt\u2019s not like crews are getting bigger these days.\nIf you don\u2019t have two guys dragging hoses for three and a half hours a day it\nmakes a giant difference. That\u2019s 70 hours a week. It\u2019s huge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consistency has been another\nwin: \u201cBefore we had lots of peaks and valleys. Ever since Zipline, we\u2019ve been\nabout as fluid as we could be. All of our dry areas hang there in a lot longer.\nThey\u2019re really non-existent at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s a rare convert to\nZipline who never applied Revolution previously\u2026but he started using it a year\nago on tees and fairways every 30 days to even everything out. \u201cOur hot spot\nprogram gets smaller all the time. And as far as playability it just firms\neverything up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the financial savings are\nsubstantial: \u201cThe week we spray we water it in that night and then we can skip\nwatering it a few times. We pay for our own water here so that\u2019s a big deal for\n285 acres of turf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, he says it was\nan easy decision to make Zipline a routine part of his program: \u201cWe pretty much\nspray foliar every Friday so we put the Zipline in with that. It\u2019s safe so it\nhangs out fine until it\u2019s watered in that night. And we haven\u2019t had any issues\nwith watering in. It saves me money in labor, saves me grief from golfers and\nit\u2019s safe. What\u2019s not to like?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
