By Aquatrols | Like many superintendents in the west, Rick Friedemann has struggled with salt issues on his course for as long as he can remember. Three years ago, he decided he had enough and reached out to Aquatrols Territory Manager, Kenn Mauser for a solution.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Rick Friedemann left his home in the Sooner State to head to Nevada in 1989, he didn\u2019t know he would be jumping on a 30-year ride on the rollercoaster of the Las Vegas golf business. Along the way, he\u2019s maintained several of the region\u2019s best courses and even grew in Bali Hai, the high-profile Curley-Schmidt track that was one of the most elaborate and expensive projects of its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But today, he\u2019s focused on a\nproblem that\u2019s plagued him and pretty much every superintendent in the\nSouthwest forever: salt. In a word, the water in Henderson where Friedemann\noversees the Jay Morrish-designed DragonRidge GC, \u2018sucks\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAbout 40% of the cations in our fresh water are sodium. Bicarbonates really try to kick your butt during high-stress periods, particularly in the winter. They seal off the surface and even create layers in the root zone. The salt builds up and burns the roots. The only good thing I can say about our water is that it\u2019s a great growth regulator,\u201d he half-jokes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superintendents in the West\ndealing with bicarbonate issues primarily rely on \u201clots of aerification, lots\nof flushing and lots of calcium\u201d says Friedemann. \u201cMy program was to flush\nquarterly and that generally worked well with newer greens. But when you have\n22-year-old USGA greens and you only get 4\u201d of rainfall annually you have to do\nsomething more for infiltration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of that, it gets even\ntougher when you only have 1.5\u201d of annual rainfall like last year\u2026and perhaps\nagain this year according to forecasts. \u201cIf you\u2019re looking for rain in this\narea you\u2019re probably in the wrong spot.\u201d The bottom line was that his greens\nwere struggling in both summer and winter and Friedemann was stressed out about\nit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mauser describes the problem\nas chemical compaction. \u201cCarbonate deposits create a seal that\u2019s broken when\nthey get wet, but immediately re-forms and seals off again,\u201d he says. \u201cThe soils\nsimply get plugged up. The solution is a Blast Sprayable drench treatment to\nget down into the soil profile and dissolve the carbonate deposits as it works\nit way downward and laterally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, he turned to Ken Mauser (Aquatrols\u2019 western territory manager) to figure out a better flush program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe recommended Blast<\/a>, which I\u2019d used in smaller doses to flush before. It took a while to wrap my head around the idea of putting acid on your greens when it\u2019s 110 outside. Now I realize it wasn\u2019t really a problem because we put down such a volume of water.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Friedemann describes the\nprocess: \u201cWe do solid-tine aerification, then apply a high rate of calcite\ncalcium. Then we set up an EZ-Flow or Dosatron with a Hunter head and roller\nbase. We have a 10-gallon tank with 5 gallons of Blast and 5 gallons of water\nand we inject that over a 12-14-hour period. It\u2019s about 14,000 gallons of water\nthrough a 5,000-square foot green.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friedemann uses readings\ncollected with a Dynamax sensor to measure effectiveness and to determine which\ngreens need flushing the most. \u201cI\u2019ve had salt readings of as high as 450 that\ngo down to 100-110 after we flush.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just incredible the\nnext day when you come in and the greens are firm, feel good, and look refreshed.\nEven my GM could see the difference.\u201d Three years after the first successful\ntreatment, they\u2019re doing it again on a very busy golf course. They space out\nthe flushes to keep from interfering with play. Friedemann\u2019s team can usually\ndo two greens overnight on Mondays when the course is closed. \u201cUsing the sensor\ndata makes all the difference so you can tell where you need to focus,\u201d he\nsays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nFriedemann, this is also part of an overall effort to keep up with lots of new\nrounds from new members who joined during the pandemic. \u201cWe\u2019re doing more\nsurface management and I want to keep cleaning out that top six inches \u2013 the\nrootzone \u2013 to get the right amount of air, the right amount of water, and\ncreate an environment for the roots to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treating 20 greens with Blast\nis about a $7,000 investment for DragonRidge but it\u2019s a sound one for\nFriedemann. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t go without it now. You see the roots come back, you see\nvibrant growth in the grass\u2026it\u2019s just incredible. And you can verify the\nresults with the salt meter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts about the\nwhole process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think you have to measure\nall the physical parameters of the soil: air, water, bulk density, salts\u2026and\nKen is a wonderful resource for that. He gets me all the information I need and\nputs programs together that will address the problems and make the whole golf\ncourse better from tee to green.\u201d  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
