If you\u2019ve been in this\nindustry for a while and you don\u2019t know Erich Slider you probably haven\u2019t been\npaying attention. He\u2019s one of the last old-time LESCO reps who\u2019s still kicking\nit with SiteOne where he serves as the Southern Director of Golf. We checked in\nwith him and his southwest Florida Golf Sales Manager, Max McGee, to discuss an\ninteresting question: Why do you guys sell so much Aqueduct Sprayable down that\nway? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does Aquatrols<\/strong>\u00ae fit for you and SiteOne in Florida?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erich: We started working with them 3 or 4 years ago and we definitely saw the fit. They\u2019ve put in a lot of effort and have proven themselves as a leader in that market. Their products seem to go along with how we like to work with supers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you decide that Aqueduct Sprayable was a good recommendation to your customers?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: Before releasing it to everyone I put it to the test with a longtime customer, Chuck Eberle, at Windstar on Naples Bay. He\u2019s been a longtime user of LESCO Wet but we wanted to find which product from the Aquatrols line would work best here in SW Florida. We set up a trial comparing plots with different applications of Aqueduct, Revolution\u00ae, LESCO Wet, LESCO Flow and LESCO Moisture Manager on a test green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found that the Aqueduct\nSprayable was the standout for us in terms of consistent wetting and rewetting\nof the soils. It wasn\u2019t too wet and it wasn\u2019t too dry. It also dried down more\nconsistently post-application than the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s remarkable \u2013 and\nadmirable \u2013 that you chose to test products that way and stick to the\nresults. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: We showed that Aqueduct\nSprayable was the most desirable wetting agent for our customers so we were\nable to sell it confidently and know what kinds of results they were going to\nget. In this market, it has been by far the biggest-selling wetting agent for\nSiteOne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erich: We couldn\u2019t believe we\nwere selling this much Aqueduct. It\u2019s a specialized app but it doesn\u2019t have to\nbe watered in, so it\u2019s very predictable and has low burn potential. It worked\nthe best under the circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How have things\nevolved since you did that testing and other products have come into the mix?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: We still sell the majority of customers the sprayable. We\u2019re still testing Zipline\u00ae but some customers already prefer it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing I\u2019ve learned over the\npast couple of years is that it really depends on the site and the\nsuperintendent with new products. There\u2019s no one way to do things in this\nindustry. The best part about Aquatrols is they have a portfolio of specialized\nproducts that can find a place in almost anyone\u2019s agronomic program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of\nwhich how does the Aqueduct Flex<\/strong>\u2122 version of the product perform\nfor your customers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: It\u2019s a very useful thing\nto keep in the back of the cart for as-needed fixes. You don\u2019t need to water it\nin immediately so when they come across a hydrophobic area they can just\nsprinkle it down and wait for the nighttime irrigation cycle to run and\nactivate the product. It\u2019s the flexibility built into that product that supers\nreally enjoy and appreciate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erich: It\u2019s a convenience\nproduct. Take a walk spreader out and hit the high areas. It makes the water\nwork a little bit smarter. Flex means flexibility to me. If it was me, it would\nalways be next to my bag of fire ant bait. I used to always carry bait around\nbut now I\u2019d carry Flex too. It has a low burn potential so you don\u2019t have to\nworry about turning that irrigation head on. And it\u2019s biodegradable and safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talk about that turf\nsafety aspect\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: One of the great things\nabout Aquatrols is the low burn potential \u2013 almost none \u2013 across their whole\nportfolio. That was a big reason we partnered with them. That safety is\nparamount when choosing a wetting agent product. I\u2019ve heard too many stories of\nguys trying to rectify a problem on their greens and they end up making it way\nworse by smoking the turf with some hot alcohol product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some other\nways supers are using Aqueduct Flex in your area?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: Most supers will agree\nthat moisture management on bunker faces is one of the tougher challenges.\nFlorida soils are inherently sandy and don\u2019t hold moisture for very long and they\nalso get hydrophobic easily. Turf bunker faces get splashed with sand\nconstantly. The super can take a whirlybird hand spreader or vortex spreader\nand just hit the bunker faces with it. Basically, it gives you a programmed\napproach to maintain soil moisture on the bunker face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erich: Products like this are\na great example of a labor-saving tool. You can apply this one time and it\nsaves an irrigation tech from going back three or four times. That\u2019s such an\nimportant focus as the labor situation gets worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max: We can spout university\ndata but unless you can provide an in-person test like we did with Chuck it\u2019s\nstill a leap of faith. Localized testing like this really makes a difference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
