Tracy Shanahan began his 30-year turf career when took a summer\njob on the staff at Auburn Valley Golf Course under northern California turf\nlegend, Mike Phillips. It was love at first sight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo weeks after I started, I asked Mike how I could get a\njob like his and he pointed me toward a local junior college and helped me get\ninvolved in the NCGA assistant superintendent intern program,\u201d Shanahan\nrecalls. Later he followed Phillips to Almaden Golf & Country Club which he\ncalled a \u201cfabulous experience\u201d that taught him golf course construction and\nhelped him solidify his career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, what was the most valuable lesson he learned\nfrom Phillips?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMike hammered this home: It\u2019s very easy to over-manage\nturf. You really just need to focus on ABCs: if you water, fertilize and mow it\nthe right way you\u2019re going to have pretty good turf. So I try to keep it\nsimple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shanahan has been successfully keeping it simple at Peach\nTree Golf Course in idyllic Marysville, California, for almost a decade. He has\nhad plenty of challenges but it has two enormous advantages that make things\nway simpler. First, it sits on a pretty large underground lake so they have\nplentiful well water. And second, it\u2019s in a river basin made up of all-sand\nsoils. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty unusual geologically for this region. We hardly have a\ndrain tile out here and we have common Bermuda fairways that do very, very well\nhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bent\/Poa greens are a bigger challenge. Shanahan calls\nthem \u201cthatchy beasts.\u201d But he tries to avoid pulling cores and instead he uses regular\nmicro-aerification.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re poking holes in the greens all the time. I\u2019m a big\nfan of the Ninja tines and needle tines so we go every couple of weeks instead\nof doing full cores. I\u2019m all in on managing my thatch with the Ninja tine\ninstead of the full core. Everybody hates the full core including my members, my\nstaff and, mostly, me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shanahan says they can typically micro-aerify 9 holes in a\nmorning and be fine again within days.  \u201cWe\ncan poke them Tuesday, get them cleaned up and rolled and by Friday the members\nusually won\u2019t be able to tell we did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The micro-aerification approach makes the role of his wetting agent even more important. He\u2019d been a longtime Revolution\u00ae user so he was intrigued when Aquatrols\u00ae rep Ken Mauser told him about Zipline\u2122. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been a firm believer in Revolution and it holds the\nmoisture pretty darned well. But I was excited about something that evened out\nthe water movement of the soil profile with a little bit of pushing effect. I\nwant to keep my greens pretty receptive, but members also prefer putting on a\nlittle firmer green. Zipline helps me meet both those expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shanahan immediately noticed that Zipline helps get water\nback into the rootzone after they\u2019d dried greens down. He has a simple reliable\nway to tell that it\u2019s doing the job:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe test on that is how much do I have to soak the spots to\nrewet the rootzone and get the water moving again. This year with Zipline it didn\u2019t\ntake nearly as much water to get that penetration and start to see bubbles \u2013 that\nair displacement. The water is able to get through that hydrophobic sand\nprofile that develops when we let them dry out. It rewets very quickly.\nImpressively so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it passes the ABC test? \u201cEasier is better. When you see\nthose bubbles and know that air displacement is happening, it\u2019s a big relief. I\ninstantly know it\u2019s working like it\u2019s supposed to.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His program is also simple: He sprays 5oz\/1000 of Zipline every\n21-28 days. \u201cI started putting Zipline out around the first day of spring and\nwe\u2019ll go every 3-4 weeks through October. I use Aqueduct\u2122\nSprayable through the winter. We have a distinct rainy stretch here between\nNovember and April so I like a pusher for the winter. I\u2019m using one or the\nother 12 months out of the year.\u201d He typically applies the products as a\nstandalone and keeps his fertility and plant health sprays separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does he feel like it helps with labor? \u201cAbsolutely. We\nhaven\u2019t had to spend nearly as much time dragging hose. That\u2019s a major thing\nfor us because we still don\u2019t have the biggest staff in the world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he does have a veteran in his corner when it comes to\nusing Aquatrols products. \u201cKen Mauser is very intelligent. I\u2019ve heard him speak\nfor years and I\u2019ve always been impressed with the science and how he explains\nit. I\u2019ve also always been impressed with the research Aquatrols puts out. I\u2019ve\nused their products for 26 years and have just always found success with using their\nproducts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bottom line for Shanahan are those bubbles. \u201cIt\u2019s so\ncrucial for us to keep water moving through the soil to make sure we have\nquality greens through Labor Day and Zipline really helps us do that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
