It\u2019s likely you\u2019ve never heard of Tom Walker. He\u2019s not a\n\u201cname\u201d super\u2026but the elite turfies and the world\u2019s best turf researchers sure\nknow who he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I texted Matt Shaffer to ask him about Walker. He called him \u201csuper, super smart\u201d and said he \u201cdoesn\u2019t follow the herd.\u201d Jon Lobenstine, a neighbor of his in Maryland, described him as \u201cvery cerebral\u201d and says he \u201cthinks outside the box.\u201d His Aquatrols\u00ae rep, Tom Valentine, flatly calls him \u201cbrilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walker is a bit of a savant. He\u2019s sees connections others\ndon\u2019t and generally isn\u2019t too concerned with what others are thinking or doing\nfor that matter. Yet others, like Shaffer and a pack of respected turfheads,\nhave made the pilgrimage to spend time with him at his very private course in\nMaryland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you\u2019re probably thinking, how has he achieved this oracle\nstatus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well perhaps because Walker clearly has a gift for both\nscience and common sense. He also has an incredible work ethic which stems from\nbeing a poor kid in the 1950s in Toledo, mowing lawns and shoveling driveways\nfor a quarter. By 11, he was caddying at Inverness Club. By 13, he was\nhand-raking bunkers on the crew. At 15, he set a goal of becoming the club\u2019s superintendent.\nHe earned his degree at OSU in \u201973 but says he learned more from non-turf\nclasses. In 1979, he achieved his childhood goal when he was hired as only the\nfourth superintendent at the legendary old club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next 25 years, Walker collaborated extensively with\na who\u2019s who of turf scientists including Beard, Rieke, Vargas and Watschke to\nsolve agronomic puzzles at Inverness. He continued that work at his current\nfacility, a course he helped to design and is largely his agronomic brainchild.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I talked with Walker recently, I expected that I\u2019d have a hard time keeping up with his scientific understanding (I was right) but I didn\u2019t expect to learn so much. Most notably, he opened my eyes to the interrelationship between fairy ring and localized dry spot. And he shared how a fairway wetting agent injection using Sixteen90\u00ae and Zipline\u00ae has become a staple part of his program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do these other great supers come visit you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the reason people want to come visit is that I enjoy\nscience far more than most people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I love sharing things with people. I love showing them\ngood stuff we\u2019ve been able to accomplish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the last 15 years there hasn\u2019t been one Poa plant on our\nfairways, tees or greens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have my attention. How?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s just good management practices. You keep dense turf so\nevery wheel mark doesn\u2019t end up filling up with Poa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also know there are certain days in the spring when you\ncan choke the water off and let everything smoke out. I try to time that with\nlate-stage seed-head production, when the Poa is the absolute weakest and it\nwants to die anyhow, then you just cut the water off. That and tebuconazole. It\nencourages bent to spread and helps kill the Poa. You have to time it correctly\nto get it right, but it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your course isn\u2019t famous but it\u2019s fabulous.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s probably the best situation in the country. I\u2019m trying\nto keep it a secret. Shhh. (Laughs)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have a beautiful facility and a beautiful golf course. I\ngot to work with our owner to build the entire golf course and do some of the design.\nAny place I wanted a road, we put a road. I designed the buildings here as well.\nMost people don\u2019t get to do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What drives you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have absolutely no fear of anything except losing a\nhundred square feet of turf. I jump out of helicopters and do deep-powder\nskiing and I cycle everywhere without a thought. But losing turf scares me to\ndeath. That\u2019s what I fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That seems\u2026stressful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I release anxiety in my sleep. If I have any form of anxiety,\nI work through it on an unconscious level and I let it go. I wake up the next\nmorning and I\u2019m good to go. You have to discipline yourself. You walk through\nit all, you take a deep breath, you think about tomorrow and move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell me about working with researchers over the years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Harry Niemczyk and I tested imidacloprid to control ataenius\nbeetles and grubs early on. I concluded that going earlier made sense. Normally\nit would have been June, but I went late April or early May. We figured out we\ncould eliminate three sprays with one imidacloprid treatment. I still use it\ntoday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also Dr. Vargas and I came up with an early explanation of\nwhat later was called \u201cMad Tiller\u201d or etiolation. We saw the tillering and determined\nthat it was\nAcidovorax avenae, which causes\nweak bacterial wilt. We felt like PGRs were part of the issue, but\nit was also climatic. Weather, humidity and moisture played a role but the key\ningredient to all that was fertility. Particularly too much nitrogen,\nespecially ammonium sulphate. Vargas and I came up with the cause way back when,\nand learned how to manage it, but it didn\u2019t become a big issue until way later.\nBecause of that we\u2019ve avoided it here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your thoughts on wetting agents? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The issue boils down to wetting, moving water through the\nsoil profile, and maintaining adequate soil moisture without excess water in\nthe thatch. Getting the water in and moving moisture into the root zone seems\npretty simple, right? The first wetting agents were penetrants akin to\ndetergent. Later the pendulum swung to wetting the thatch and rapidly shifted\nto blending materials to accomplish \u201call-encompassing results.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I experiment with different formulators and different materials, splitting fairways, putting materials side by side, and leaving check\/control plots in the side-by-side tests. I use wet sites and dry sites. My goal is to find a material that can move water through the thatch rapidly. My ultimate goal is to get these results with predicable longevity. Some materials work okay as a penetrant for short periods of time and excellent at holding moisture in the soil. Sixteen90\u00ae is on the cusp of providing relevant longer lasting impact, keeping the surface a bit drier\/firmer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us about the connection you\u2019ve found between fairy\nring and localized dry spot where the soil seems sealed off? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I regrassed greens with methyl bromide, one of the\norganisms left behind was basidiomycetes. Right there I\u2019ve set the stage for future\nproblems. I started getting these little fairy rings. I should have been\nproactive at this sign, but I wasn\u2019t and the following year I had localized dry\nspot like you couldn\u2019t imagine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, my best use for wetting agents right now is controlling fairy\nring and preventing it from sealing off the soil. That active frame creates the\nopportunity for the localized dry spots. Wetting agents mixed in take care of\nit. We use both Sixteen90 and Zipline.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It definitely masks the symptoms of the fairy ring and it definitely\nenhances effectiveness of the control product. Is the wetting agent enhancing\nmy fairy ring control? Absolutely. There\u2019s value in that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How are you getting it onto your fairways?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m a big believer in spraying and watering in. We always\nspray in the dew and water in behind it. That gets risky after 10 a.m. So, I\nthought maybe the answer is injecting it. My irrigation system is pretty sophisticated,\nand the heads are calibrated so I can get that material out and mixed with\nwater very efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, you can put it where you want it through your\nfertigation system?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wants to go in the water right away. Why not put it down\nthat way? I know that some experts I trust don\u2019t necessarily recommend injection\ndue to accuracy. Fortunately, I have yet to have a problem with it. Also, we\nactually have a pretty small staff here so there\u2019s no way I can have people\nriding sprayers all day long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final question: What magic bullet for future turf\nmanagement could you envision?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is, what I need to do is remove the thatch. When\nI was in college, I learned about enzymes in an agriculture class. I just don\u2019t\nbelieve that basidiomycetes are the only thing that can break down thatch. I think\nenzymes like laccase might potentially be the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sit and contemplate a lot. I don\u2019t necessarily pay\nattention to the available solutions. Like, I know there\u2019s an answer for ABW\nhovering around some rice paddy somewhere. The solutions are out there. We just\nneed to keep looking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
